Three Cheers for our Representatives! Text of the letter co-sponsored by Democrat Tom Lantos and Republican Benjamin Gilman that gained the bipartisan support of 53 of our representatives! The Congressional Sign-On was a joint project between the ASPCA (Legislative Affairs Department in DC) and PaLC. Washington, DC 20515 Postmaster General United States Postal Service 475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW Washington, DC 20260-2437 Dear Postmaster Henderson: We are writing to express our support for a commemorative postal stamp with the theme, "Stamp Out Pet Overpopulation/Spay and Neuter Your Pets." Over the past year and a half, the proposed SPAY/NEUTER stamp has garnered endorsements from many of the nation's leading veterinary medical colleges and professional societies as well as from more than 200 humane organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Prevent a Litter Coalition. Your Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee has received requests for the stamp from Americans from all 50 states as well as from several U.S. territories. Beginning with April as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, school children around the country are participating in poster contests and letter writing campaigns to urge you to issue the SPAY/NEUTER stamp. From Owney, the nineteenth century Post Service mascot, to Lassie, to Socks and Buddy, companion animals are part and parcel of our American tradition as well as an integral part of our daily lives. Approximately 60 percent of U.S. households include at least one dog or cat. A recent national survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association found that 69 percent of dog owners and 60 percent of cat owners give their pets as much attention as they would their children. In closing, a U.S. commemorative postal stamp reminding Americans to spay and neuter their pets would be a powerful tool in alleviating the needless suffering, taxpayer cost, and public nuisance of millions of unwanted dogs and cats. Stamps that depict companion animals have broad public appeal, especially among children -- the next generation of pet owners and philatelists. We respectfully urge you to include this humane educational stamp among the postal commemoratives in the next U.S. stamp program. Sincerely, Benjamin A. Gilman, M.C. Tom Lantos, M.C. |
